Useful Information for delegates traveling from abroad

Entry to the United States

All travelers entering the U.S. must carry a valid passport. In most cases, your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date from the U.S. Check with your country’s U.S. embassy or consulate to confirm your requirements.

In addition to a passport, you may also need one of the following:

1. A Visitor Visa (B-1/B-2)

This applies to most travelers attending meetings, conferences or tourism-related activities. Apply well in advance at your nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Wait times can be lengthy, especially during peak travel seasons.

Find more information at travel.state.gov

2. Visa Waiver Program and ESTA

If you are from a country participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), you may travel to the U.S. without a visa. However, you must apply online for travel authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

  • Apply as early as possible—even if your travel plans are not finalized.

  • ESTA approval is usually valid for two years or until your passport expires.

  • Applications should be submitted at least 72 hours prior to departure.

To apply for ESTA, visit esta.cbp.dhs.gov

We encourage international travelers to begin visa or ESTA applications as soon as possible.

Travel Safety and Resources

Review the U.S. Department of State Traveler’s Checklist for guidance on health, safety and document preparation.

Consider enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive travel alerts and make it easier for the U.S. Embassy to assist you during an emergency.

To enroll, visit step.state.gov
